Canvases are about readability. Agents used to hand back time series only as markdown tables, leaving you to chart them yourself before they made sense. Now an agent can deliver a page you can click through and work with. Its look, and the interactive logic built into it, follow whatever you ask for; a dashboard keeping watch over real data is just one possibility (Cursor blog).
When you want a particular kind of canvas, put the recipe in a skill and the agent will follow it. If what you need is an interactive diagram of a repo's architecture, Cursor already provides a skill for that: Docs Canvas. On-screen building blocks such as tables and charts come built into Cursor (Cursor blog).
