Google SynthID is among TIME's picks for 2026's top inventions

Google DeepMind announced the honor and noted that the SynthID watermark is already on more than 180 billion videos and images (@GoogleDeepMind).

TIME's write-up recounts that about ten years ago, Google concluded that relying on models to tell real images from generated ones would eventually stop working, so it went the watermark route instead. Cutting, compressing or cropping images and video afterward can't wipe out SynthID, which on those formats consists of tiny pixel changes the eye can't see. TIME pitches the invention as an AI content checker anyone can use (TIME).
